Five year plan

I have been asked occasionally what my five year plan is. With the start of the new academic year beckoning one begins to think about such things. Having a five year plan and knowing what you’re going to do exactly for the next five years of your life slightly terrifies me. I have no idea what I am going to be doing day by day at the moment let alone month or year.

A five year plan, I agree, provides a certain degree of stability to an otherwise uncertain life, yet it denies possibilities or openings or spontaneity. Some may argue spontaneity is a gift only for those who can afford it, yet spontaneity can be taken in all manner of ways from what you’re going to wear each day to what you will cook for dinner at the end of the night.

It is important, especially at the moment, to be open to new ideas and ways of doing things, as they are constantly changing… to be fluid, flexible and brave enough to take the chance that may open up to you if you open your eyes to see it. As Cinderella is told, “having courage and being kind” can get you a long way, without necessarily needing a plan to stick to.
