There is a lot to be said for being grateful for what you’ve got. As I have been writing my dissertation I have been looking at the construction of childhood. Certainly, when I was growing up children were granted freedom to explore and spend time independently. Life was not a roller coaster of one activity after another. Events were not planned; we got bored and used our imaginations to entertain ourselves. It is now often tempting to have every second of our days planned and accounted for, thus removing the opportunity for boredom and imagination.
With life suddenly changing during lockdown we have been faced with more time than we are used to. In its absence, it is easy to resort to netfix and procrastination. While I appreciate this is an easy option (and one I am guilty of) maybe this period of our lives could be seen as a chance to think outside the box. (both literally and metaphorically) To use empty egg boxes to create works of art, to write a story, paint a picture, write a poem- create things that will provide pleasure and fulfilment to our lives, to try to reclaim the childhood we remember growing up, where we built dens and explored the countryside…it is all there on our doorstep and sometimes you just need the courage to get out and explore it.
