As a result of the recent hot weather we have been having a lot of flies in our house. While my brother likes to swat them, I tend to take the side of the fly, much to his annoyance. If you look at a fly closely it really is a beautiful creature, with it’s legs and perfect wings…
One of the pleasures of lockdown, for me, has been having the time to look more closely and appreciate the animals around me. We are very lucky to live on a planet we are able to share with so many creatures; creatures like birds who work tirelessly, travelling miles every year, creating their beautiful nests, foraging and feeding their young, teaching them to fly only for the cycle to begin again. It is important to not only appreciate the life cycle of a bird but to give time to appreciate how amazing the creatures living around us are. While humans continue to impinge on their environment, the animals respond by adapting, striving and continuing stronger than before.
Hopefully, we can learn to appreciate the animals around us and the pleasure they give. And the next time you want to swat a fly, just take a little bit of time to look closely at it’s beautifully formed and proportioned body, a creature that deserves to live and enjoy this lovely planet just as much as you and me. (Just don’t fall out with your brother in doing so!)
